Making Podium people actually isn't difficult if you start with a decent mask.There is a tutorial for creating perfect Podium masks in the Tips, Tricks & Tutorials section.
When you have a suitable mask, import it into SU. Rotate the image to the right orientation (90 degrees around the X axis), Explode it, make it a component, hide the edges, set the insertion point, make it a 'face me' component and way to go!
I never set the glue to plane options in case you want to use the components on a sloping ground plane.
