Another way of acheiving what clipmaps do is with cutouts.
I kinda prefer them because the SU model stays closer to the rendering cause you do not get those rectangle faces in the view. And the shadows are accurate.
They may look lenghty to do but using components helps speed it up.
Also you often do not need to make a clipmap image.
In the attached example, I did a cutout and replaced half of the grass in the clipmap tutorial file.
So both method are merged here for the render.

Making a cut-out starts, exacly like a clipmap, by applying an image to a face. Next step is different. Instead of making an image mask to make the background disapear at render, you cut the background out from the face directly in SkUp. Then hide the line segments.
In the picture; left is a cut-out, right is a clipmap. They will render exactly the same in Podium.
Entourage Arts provides really nice ones of people, trees and vegetation.

True , it makes SU looking closer to the rendered image. DO you mind posting that cutout?

You can't mention Kerky here. I did once, and Sid sent some hooligans to rough me up. Seriously. I've got the scars to prove it.

No need for that, Pilou. I was only joking.

David ... I got 12 rottweilers these days. Just in case.

Cutting out a tree like this could last some time, I think. So I prefer png's as clipmaps (OK the shadows aren't correct, but when modeling, I usually keep shadows off anyway...)

[left tree is jpg, right tree is png ... and Bryce is just himself ]

Well, Pilou, clipmaps work OK when rendered with podium. Of course.
But the direct output inside SketchUp still shows the rectangular shadow of the 'unclipped' surface ...
