a button to copy/paste material settings from one to another would be nice ...

often I try different wood textures for certain areas and find myself setting up every single one of them again with standard values for bump/reflection/blur etc.

right-clicking on one material and COPY PODIUM-SETTINGS then right-clicking on another and PASTE PODIUM-SETTINGS would be nice ...

Yeah.  I like this idea and it's been tossed around.  Maybe something that allows you to save the material settings to a specific text/ data file and then read it back in.

Wouldn't -in the meantime- saving out a generic .skm (no texture) do the trick? You know ... rubbed.skm, satin.skm, lacquered.skm ...

Right, Tom. "Wouldn't" is the keyword - I tried it some time ago and created a small material pack myself this way ... but when I recently tried to import those into a new model I got SU-bug-splats all the time.

Don't know why and hadn't time to go deeper into it, so I dropped the idea and went back to manually hack into the values ... no big deal actually but annoying.

Skm files don't work nearly as nicely on the Mac as on Windows. This is why we aren't doing more with them. They also don't contain Podium properties. For this you need geometry, which is why the Browser works as it does.

That's rather odd. I mean, then how do 'automatic materials' work?

It's a secret! Nothing in the skm file though

[Edit: Burhard reported a problem of a potential conflict with a custom skm library produced by some guy for Maxwell. This has xml files as part of the skm package.
As I'm sure you know, skm is a zipped wrapper for an image file and some other stuff. There is no documentation on using skm files for these things, it's a nice idea that we have looked at]
