Firstly bigstick, thank you for taking the time to criticise my work at such length.
I have made some adjustments and I am OK with the result, although I am puzzled by the artefacts at the wall / step join as there is a sealed void behind.
I want to achieve (in my work generally) a level of realism sufficient to be incorporated in graphic design and architectural presentation.

To be sure about those artifacts, make sure all connecting faces are on the front side(white by default). You can see this easily with SketchUp's monochrome mode.

What preset have you used?

If you point the camera a pit upwards, and try to be perfectly perpendicular to the wall in front, change the floor texture to something better from the browser and model correctly that door, it will look pretty good!
