Hello All,

With the latest upgrade in Podium, our office is finally discussing the potential of using rendered panoramas for visualization tools for our clients, and the Panorama Viewer server is helping it along nicely - Spherecast.org wasn't a bad option, but the distortion and lack of zooming was an issue, and their website was lacking when it came to info, so we were leery of posting material there...  The Panorama Viewer server seems to address those issues, so thanks for creating!

It's still pretty new, so this wishlist might be somewhat premature, but here's some feedback:

  • It'd be nice to have another level of hyperlink where a client can access an entire category with one link, and see at a glance what panoramas are available (possibly with an optional simple text description.  Currently, we send them a series of links via email, so it's not a huge issue.
  • The ability to hot-spot would be an absolute game changer, offering seamless virtual tours without actually being in 3D (Myst III anyone?).  It'd be nice for a client to click on a door and jump to the next space over, or click on the light switch in your rendering, and it loads the same scene, but rendered with a different lighting scheme...  Of course, when you this extra layer of complexity, there's a trade-off in simplicity of the interface, so there's balance to be had.
Food for thought...

Thanks for posting this!

The category option in the Panorama viewer allows you to group panoramas that someone can select individually. What you can't currently do though, is post a link to an individual category.

This is great idea, and something we could look into.

Hotspots are something we have discussed, it's a great idea but it's quite a bit of work. Not sure about how feasible this is practically.

True about the hotspots - I don't see other viewer programs using them as often as I'd think, but perhaps it's the nature of the technique...

Great to be heard though.  Thanks!

It's me again...

(some of this might be more like bug fix suggestions, but didn't want to start a new string...)

  • Thoughts on editing Panoramas that are already uploaded: would be nice to have way to relocate a panorama from one category to another; also could be nice to have sorting or manual re-ordering options for the panoramas and categories. Considering how fast it is to just re-upload/ process a panorama to a new category, I'd say this is a minor issue.
  • It's a little goofy trying to rename categories - the rename screen lingers and the category list doesn't refresh automatically, so I've done some accidental renaming a few times, with odd results as I try to jump between open panorama tabs... refreshing the page seems to fix things though.
  • Maybe add a little inertia to the panorama panning? (i.e. panorama slows to a stop gradually after panning, as opposed to stopping on a dime)  It may help create a more fluid feel to the panorama, or viewers may just hate it... It seems to be common in other programs nowadays, like Photoshop and Google Earth...
