I was excited to use the Podium Section plane tool for the first time, but didn't get results.  I'm posting images of before using the tool, and then after, as well as the model.
In the after image, the entire section plane just turned black without showing a cut.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks much!

Diane

The Podium section tool actually duplicates your model and then makes a physical cut.  So after it finishes if you just select that black plane and delete it, your section cut will be visible.

You will likely need to "fill in" a couple holes before you render, but the manual editing should pretty simple in this case.  If you're seeing the black faces though, it should mean that it worked. You just have to delete the section plane [smile].

Okay..that worked and then I rendered.  The rendering shows sunlight coming through the section cut...guess I had hoped that was part of the beauty of this tool...that it would control sunlight to create a believable image with lighting as if there was no section cut.  Is that not true or am I missing something else?

No I don't think you're missing anything.  Truthfully, the tool is just a streamlined interface for intersecting a plane through your model, so it doesn't really have the functionality you're hoping for.

That said, I have seen some pretty successful section renders from Podium.

I would probably suggest turning shadows off, and then setting the Podium background to "default" instead of physical sky.

Set your SketchUp style to a middle-gray value, and you should get a very neutral soft-box type effect.

This works pretty well if you're rendering orthographic views -- if you're going for a more photorealistic type render with a realistic background, I think you'll have to play around with settings a bit.

This actually works fine. What hasn't happened here is that the 'holes' in the section cut plane haven't been removed.

This is nothing to do with Podium or the plugin, it's how SU calculates and deals with 'island holes' in geometry.

Most people have experience the problem from time to time where when you create geometry on a plane which has co-planar 'holes' in the surface, and they get infilled. They then have to be removed manually.

This is precisely what is happening here. You have to double-click on the section cut plane geometry (because it's a group) and then remove all the 'holes' manually.

There is no way of preventing this, because SU when creating faces which have internal loops, doesn't know which are to be kept, or which are to be removed. It's a limitation of surface modellers.

That should fix it for you [smile]
