I have tried to find a specific forum for podium walker, but I have been unsuccessful.
If there is a place other than here that I should use for walker questions, please let me know.

Thanks

My questions:

Question #1. I am making an exterior key frame animation using a total of 21 scenes imported from sketchup. I intend to break it into three or four paths to make it a little more manageable. I will combine them after the fact for the final movie.
Reading the instructions for creating a key frame animation, I came across this:
sun position.JPG  Sun position is a huge deal in creating a pleasing exterior movie. If I am reading this correctly, the sun position from my scenes will not be used by Podium walker.
- If that is the case, how do I at least dictate the sun to be in one spot that best lights my building. I am thinking I can then make 3 separate movies with the sun positioned to best light up my building and then stitch them together. I really do not want to have one side lit and the other sides shadowed.

question 2:
Speed of movie.
I am ultimately trying to get a smooth 30 fps movie.
The setting within walker are like this
camera speed.JPG
How does this translate? what setting should I use to get that 30 fps quality?

Sorry if I am a little slow here...I have always made npr movies by exporting image sets where I could specify the appropriate transition time between scenes to create the right amount of images to make a certain length movie come out at 30fps.

so, I am a little lost...

help please?

Podium Walker allows you to set the sun position in the PW window.

I'm sorry - I can't help you with the fps settings. I tend to use the defaults because I don't use PW in the office commercially.

The second question about Time I believe I have figured out. The frame rate is set in the actual movie making dialog box.

I have watched all the how to videos and read documentation and i am struggling mightily.
Mostly quality verses time settings related problems. I am currently creating a movie of a path made from just 7 of the 21 scenes I have imported. It is estimating 2 days to complete.

I am spoiled I think by Podiums preset way of doing things and I am sure I have some settings mistakes.

I see a light bulb that lets me adjust intensity and such, but I am not seeing a way to set time of day or month...which if I cant bring that with me from sketchup, how do I position the sun?

I know walker is not your primary deal bigstick and I appreciate you giving me the time of day on this subject..

That's not it.

If I remember correctly, you click at the bottom of the window where it shows the sun position.

I'll install PW and check.

aha, I see that at the bottom. If I switch scenes in my su model and then hit the camera link button the time and day is changed in walker to match sketchup.

Thanks, very helpful.

I see now that I should generate my keyframes from walker instead of importing them from sketchup. That will allow me to set the sun and shadows right.

Now I just have to figure out how to make this take less than 80 hours to run...

I am going to need some tech minded help I think...I know my gtx 1080 is on the list of cards that support iray, and all my computer specs are above and beyond recommended so I am at a loss for why I am having unusably slowwwwww performance.

I am going to keep posting my questions here in hopes one of the walker developers will become available.

Two images, both have the same time setting. They are linked between sketchup and walker.

sketchup screen shot (notice shadows)
in sketchup.JPG
in podium walker
in walker.JPG
both have 8/23 as date and 15:34 (3:24) as time
why different shadows? as i look at each scene and re link walker the sun seems to be uniformly in the opposite sky...north south not matching?...can that be adjusted in walker?

Paul,
1. The FPS is controlled in the Movie dialog box.  But I would use 25 FPS.  I think that's the standard.
2. Shadows that are different.  That's bug with PW Iray.  It doesn't happen with every mode. The sun position is not the same as in SU's sometimes but I think it has to do with PW not understanding your SU's geographic location.  Fixing this.
3. Speed of animations.  I would start with ID mode.  ID mode is a biased setting and there are some limits to it. For example, right now, ID mode will only allow for 12 artificial lights in a scene. Nvidia promises that will change very soon.  Also, if you have pale colors in the scene, ID mode tends to flicker unless you increase the sample rate.
PR mode is the best but it's the slowest.  I usually use samples as a way to control how long each frame will take to render.  ID at 1000 samples is usually very good for exteriors.  PR you will need 5000 samples.
Quick obviously is the fastest but you will need to lower the physical light.  100 samples in quick is often pretty good.
So animation will take a long time.  Our thinking was visualization is going to be the most common reason to use PodiumWalker Iray.
In the not to distant future we hope to have a Cloud server for animations that will use hundreds of GPUs.
To be honest, I have set up a system with 5 GTX 1080s....using Cubix box.  I still have to run things over night for a 1000 frame animation.

Thanks for your answers.
I am pretty happy with the video output I got with the qwk mode. It looks good.

I will need to have the actual movie use the better bigger codec because the movie will be played on a fairly big computer screen...Not sure i can tie up a computer for 4 days though...

I am fine with over night or even up to 16 hours I can manage, but I need to find a solution that I can use without needing a weekend to run the movie.

I guess I will struggle through this first one and hope for that super server to come quickly.
I have a paying client that wants these photo real movies and i would love to be able to deliver them.
