We are starting work on Podium 3 soon. We have lots of ideas, and you have been sharing these with us for a long time. Unfortunately the forum poll facility only allows us 10 choices.

Please bear in mind that many of the items on the list represent conflicting priorities, so if you all vote that everything is most important, we will have to use our own judgement.

Don't vote for anything you aren't particularly bothered about.

I have voted network rendering (internet render farm),but I also think more options for materials is also needed.

I voted for:

1. improved performance: currently, render speed is quite reasonable, but AA is rather slow.

2. more options for materials: I'd like to able to use external bump maps, and a material preview would come in handy. Also, I'm not entirely sure we're currently using the 'right' shader type for metals -Podium's metals look 'meh' to me.

3. more control over render parameters: absolutely indispensable, if you ask me. It's possible to alter the presets, obviously, but that's a rather arduous way of going about things. I'd like sliders: GI quality, AA, noise, etc.

I voted for:

1. animation support ... maybe not too important most of the time, but the few times i tried render all and SUanimate the output was way too flickering to use to convince the customer ... maybe this could be solved with a present similar to the old noisy one in v1.7 (which worked great for this kind of stuff)

2. better performance with large models ... it's less the render time that bothers me but the long 'processing scene' part with complex models before

3. more options for materials ... as stinkie said additional bump- or spec-maps would be a great improvement on some materials (tiles, wet surfaces, plain colours with bumps can come out nice, etc.)

... there are a few other things listed here that I would chose ... but three is enough for now ...

Render on,

tyro

I would like to have an option in the settings where you can choose OOPR process priority. Now I have to open task manager and set it to below normal each time I open it since I want to be able to do something else on my pc while it renders in the background.

What really confuses me, is why people are asking for HDRI lighting.
Well over 90% of the images posted here are architectural (although we always love to see different stuff) yet this is precisely the area where HDRI is least useful.

This relies on using a 360 degree high quality high dynamic range photograph, and the light source in the image is used to light your scene. No other lighting is normally required. They are typically used for rendering hyper-realistic cars in urban squares or quarry-type landscapes. They are very cool, but not ideally suited to SketchUp or Podium.

To start with, you need a good quality HDR backdrop that suits your scene. It's not easy to get these which match the environment you want to render. Secondly, they are only genuinely useful for automotive visualisation where a specific context is not required. Architecture is by its very nature, contextual.

It makes me wonder whether people actually understand what image-based lighting is, how it works, and what it is best for.

It's tempting to see a couple of images somewhere which use this technique, and think that it would be a really cool feature to have, without really thinking about how useful it will be in everyday use.

Under "More control over render parameters" can I put in a request for a cloud generator? I saw this on the wishlist board, but it's a couple years old. Aside from reducing PP time, it could be a great way to get cloud reflections onto building glass. Even preset levels would be great (cloudy, very cloudy, etc.).

Yeah, I would have added this as an item to vote for, but only had 10 options

Clouds and photographic type skies are things that we have also looked into

About HDRI in architecture...

Yes, architecture is very contextual, thus HDRI (or image based lighting) is very important in rendering architecture. You just have to look other pictures made with HDRI lighting and see the differences..

SUPodium must have this option to improve the quality of results. Physically sky is good but not enough... .

I hope this message will be heard ...

Thanks

Actually I disagree. You need to prove your case.

I've seen far more stunning renders of buildings without HDRI than with. Look here for example. A tiny proportion of these use HDRI or IBL.

For buildings at least I think this pretty much backs up my case that for architectural visualisation, we don't need it.

Hi Bigstick,

I post 2 pictures (please don't look at the grass..). Just look at the light and the glass (reflexion). The difference are big between HDRI and the other...

I try to prove my position about HDRI...
you also can look at this link, it's a friend, he always use HDRI for exterior. http://www.tridimension.be/pages/portfolio.html" target="_blank"> http://www.tridimension.be/pages/portfolio.html
