Apologize if this topic has already been closed, but wanted to ask if there has been any more development on the possibility of adding an option for Render Regions into SU Podium. It would be really useful especially when making model changes that only appear in isolated areas of camera views.

Thanks

I think what is more likely is for an option that does not process geometry that is on hidden layers.
Currently Podium does "process" all the geometry and textures in the SU model.  That is, it translates all the SketchUp faces and textures to Podium's mesh model before the actual rendering calculations start.  After Process Scenes is done, Podium then ignores hidden geometry during prerendering, raytracing and resampling. But combined with geometry caching if Podium had an option that did not process hidden geometry, the overall rendering time would decrease.  This might be something coming in the near future.
BTW - Podium Walker ignores hidden geometry and that is one of the reasons why it's processing is faster.

The simple answer is that there are no plans to add this, but you can use Edit in Place to test configuration of individual items.
It's by far the easiest and quickest solution.

I'm with Rupert on this one. I always have one or two small items that require a minor change and each view takes about an hour. If we had a 'lead shield' that would block an area off it would increase rendering times considerably. Consider a model with 20 views, by blocking off 75% of the entities from each view and controlling the 'blockage' by layer you could easily cut 10-15 hours out of a render job.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as that - if it was, it would have been implemented.

It's very difficult to do geometry culling at the pre-processing stage in SketchUp because of multiple nested components on different layers, and you will often need reflections of objects that are out of view of the camera. Also - most people are not very good at managing their models in terms of layer organisation. We wouldn't want to spend a lot of time implementing a feature to find that we end up with more problems with people complaining that random bits of their model aren't rendering. We wouldn't know how well this would work until we developed it, and then, we might find that the solution is worse than the problem [smile]

The 'render region' type feature is normally dealt with when the geometry is converted for the render engine, and virtually the whole model has to go through the entire geometry processing stage, which can be one of the most time-consuming stages.

The fastest way to preview small areas is to use 'Edit in Place' with groups or components. You can make temporary groups to deal with this.

We are looking into different ways of dealing with geometry processing as part of future development, and it is possible that other developments might cause this to actually fix itself. Unfortunately I can't tell you any more than this - sorry!

I would like to add my request also for Render Region feature. :)

Podium is great peice of software and it shall get much more efficient with the capability of rendering a region in Podium and Prowalker .

Cheers !

If you want to render a smaller area, resize the render window and render to screen resolution. Render region is not on the roadmap because there is such an easy workaround and not many people have been asking for it.
